Bill & Betty Griffin
A finger of the Chester River runs through the marsh grasses behind Bill and Betty Griffin's cottage. Their glass-enclosed porch coaxes geraniums into winter bloom, and the broad deck beyond is bathed in sunlight beneath a grove of oak trees with a few red leaves still clinging. It's a serene setting for a remarkably busy life.

The Griffins discovered Chestertown when they moved their sailboat to the Chester River in 1986. Five years later they moved to Heron Point. "It is a whole new chapter in our lives," Betty says. "We've kept our old friends and have a whole new set of friends."

They like the location, too. The Bay was a big draw, of course. Chestertown is within a few miles of many deep-water marinas. On the way to the Chesapeake, the Chester offers plenty of coves and anchorages. The Griffins go to concerts and visit art galleries in Baltimore and Washington. And when they take trips as has been done to Europe, Heron Point provides transportation to major airports. "You can easily get to any place you need to go." Last summer they sold their 35-foot Pearson, and marked the occasion by taking a cruise on a small ship from Rhode Island to Quebec through the Eire Canal.

When home, they don't slow down. Bill repairs antique clocks, a hobby that became a small business, run out of the second bedroom. Betty's perennial and shrub borders keep expanding. Bill is active with the Heron Point's computer group. Betty volunteers at the local hospital and the Heron Point library and both are active at their church. Bill is an elder, and Betty says, "I end up in the kitchen." Even without the boat, they still belong to a yacht club in Rock Hall, and to a dinner group in Chestertown. The list could go on and on.

"It's a friendly town and we've had a very happy time here."
