Dick & Virginia Lance
Dick and Virginia Lance moved to Heron Point from Ithaca, New York, in 1998 when Dick retired from Cornell University. He had been a professor of engineering there since 1962. They had vacationed in the St. Michaels area of the Eastern Shore for many years but when considering retirement were drawn to Chestertown by its small-town character and the presence of Washington College. The climate of the area also became a factor in deciding where to retire.

Virginia and Dick both wish to remain physically active. Here they are able to play outdoor platform tennis all winter with a congenial local group, and Virginia also plays regular tennis all year long with friends from the area. Dick rides his bicycle around town most of the year and swims regularly in the college pool. To enjoy all the water on the Eastern Shore they have his and her kayaks and now regularly join a large, active group of Kent and Cecil County kayakers, who meet monthly in summer to spend a couple of hours on a nearby river or creek.

The Heron Point community, Chestertown and Kent County are busy places welcoming participation in many ways. Dick is on the Resident Council of Heron Point, which acts as liaison between the residents and the professional management of Heron Point.

As part of his interest in supporting neighborhood users of computers, particularly for email and web surfing, he is on call here and in the community to help solve computer problems for individuals.

Dick is also a member of the board of a Kent County educational support foundation, sings baritone in the Kent County Chorale, and volunteers at the Washington College library. Virginia volunteers in the HP Gift Shop one afternoon a week and is a member of committees supporting endowed funding for Heron Point community development.
