| Chestertown is
a delightfully small 18th century town situated on the north side of the
Chester River on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It was
rated fourth from the top among the "nicest, alive small towns" in the
United States by the AARP magazine, Modern Maturity. And it
is small: population, 4,000 in a county of 19,000. Even though
we can lead a relaxed lifestyle here in rural Maryland, we have the additional
benefit of easy access to Baltimore and Washington,D.C. and their museums,
concert halls, and many cultural events as well as to their airports and
train stations.
But here at home in our "alive" town, Chestertown residents
enjoy the presence of Washington College, taking advantage of its courses,
films, concerts, and lectures. In addition, activities of all types
are available: golf, tennis, hunting, horseshoes, fishing, bird watching,
boating, bridge, gardening, painting, carving, continuing education, computers,
dining, music, and ping pong, just to name a few. There are many opportunities
for volunteers in the schools, hospital, government, churches, food pantry,
and the nearby Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge. The question is not "What
is there to do?" but rather "What's next?"
Pictured on this page is the hundred-year-old fountain
that graces the park in the center of town. How it was rescued, brought
to Chestertown, and placed in the park that was to become a parking lot
is a fascinating story. On Saturday mornings throughout the summer,
this park is host to a popular farmers' market, and every other Saturday
evening during the summer we enjoy Music in the Park. The town is
welcoming, and the folks who live here are friendly and engaged with their
community and with each other. It's a wonderful place to live!
